If you’ve recently happened upon the blue screen error 0x00000024 and would like to know how to effectively tackle it, then you’ve come to the right place. This post outlines exactly what this error is, and the various ways to resolve it.

As previously mentioned, error 0x00000024, is a blue screen error (BSOD), that occurs most commonly on older Windows platforms, such as Windows XP and Vista. BSOD errors, generally, occur most often when the end user starts the system. In this case, the error is typically tied to the systems Ntfs.sys file.

Symptoms of Error 0x00000024

The symptoms of this error vary, depending on the circumstances and configuration of your computer. That said, the most commonly associated symptoms, include the following:

  • Error causes active application(s) to crash.
  • Windows performs significantly slower, with sluggish mouse and keyboard input performance.
  • System intermittently freezes.
  • Blue screen of death error message appears, causing the system to randomly restart.
  • Stop error 0x00000024 occurs, accompanied by the following error message: NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM. This indicates a problem with the NTFS drivers of your system.

What Causes Error 0x00000024?

Error 0x00000024, usually, but not exclusively, occurs, when there’s a problem with the Ntfs.sys file of your system. The Ntfs.sys file, is an integral system file, that allows your operating system to read and write to the hard drives connected to your system, that use the NTFS file system (which is the standard file system today). That said, this error could be the result of the operating systems inability to properly read or write to a specific file or program.

Another common cause of this error is driver issues. If your system has lingering outdated, corrupted or incompatible drivers on it, then errors (like error 0x00000024), can occur.

Another possible cause is a malicious file. Virus attacks are more common today, than they’ve ever been, despite all the advancements in antivirus software. Therefore, it is very much possible, that a malicious file infected and corrupted integral system files on your system.

Additionally, the error could be the result of the following:

  • Corruption of the systems memory modules.
  • Corrupted Windows registry, due to the installation or uninstallation of programs.
  • Driver conflict due to the installation of a new hardware device/component.

As a blue screen error. The error message may resemble something similar to the following:

Stop: 0x00000024 (XXXXXXXXXX, XXXXXXXXXX)

Ntfs.sys – Address XXXXXXXX base at XXXXXXXX, Date Stamp XXXXXXXX

The circumstances that the error message may appear in, will vary (as mentioned early). The most common occurrences of this error, tends to be the following:

  1. While installing a program.
  2. During the boot up sequence of your system.
  3. While shutting down your computer.
  4. After or during the installation of a program or hardware component.

Note: When it comes to troubleshooting this error, it’s always best practice to take note of when and where the error occurred.

How to Fix It

The blue screen of death error message, at first glance, indicates that the error is the result of operating system failure.

Hard drives are not infallible, as they are known to break down all the time, causing various disruptions, like error 0x00000024. For this reasons, you may want to check the integrity of your hard drive, to ensure that it’s working as it should.

To do that, you can use the built-in Windows tool, called Chkdsk. This tool will scan your hard drive, detect and flag any damaged sectors it finds, then migrate data from said damaged sector.

The entire process can take a considerable amount of time, but if a corrupted hard drive is the root cause of the error, then it will be well worth it.

For step-by-step instructions on how to use this tool, check out my post on repairing error 0x80070091.

Run System File Checker

Like Chkdsk, System File Checker is another built-in Windows tool. Only, this tool is designed to replace corrupt or missing system files. This tool only examines the system files on your system.

Fortunately, error 0x00000024 is typically the result of a corrupted Ntfs.sys file, which is an integral system file.

That said, you can run the tool, by doing the following:

1. First, you will need to boot into your computer, as an administrator.

2. Once in, press windows key + R, Type cmd and press CTRL + Shift + Enter.

open command prompt using run box

3. When Command Prompt loads up, type the following command and press Enter:

sfc /scannow

Note: System File Checker uses your OS cache files to replace missing system files. In the event that it’s unable to locate these files, it will request a Windows Installation CD.
