How to fix Ftd2xx.dll Errors

Ftd2xx.dll is one of several files that belongs to the FTDI FTD2XX driver set, from FTDI Ltd. Its duties are multifaceted, but essentially, it aids in a number of related functions. It’s difficult to know exactly what it does, given it’s a third-party file, but it’s believed that it handles, primarily inbound and outbound operations for a hardware component, and is used in conjunction with various software(s) to process different options on your computer. Those of you who have encountered a problem with this ftd2xx.dll file, have come to the right post.

Is Ftd2xx.dll Dangerous?

Ftd2xx.dll despite being a DLL file, is executable, containing specifically, machine code. In the event that the software drivers from FTDI FTD2XX are utilised, the code contained in this file, will be executed. During this process, the file is loaded into the system memory (RAM) and runs in the background as an ftd2xx.dll process.

That said, there’s no official security rating for the ftd2xx.dll file. So its level of threat to your system cannot be ascertained. However, if the file is present on your system, it should be found in the following location:

C:\Windows\System32

If you find it anywhere else on your system, there’s a strong chance it’s a malicious (virus) file.

Can You Remove or Stop Ftd2xx.dll?

Ftd2xx.dll is a non-system process, which means it’s not an essential process required by the operating system. So, it can be stopped, without causing any harm to your Windows experience.

As previously stated, ftd2xx.dll is part of a driver set, developed by FTDI Ltd. Thus, if you no longer require the corresponding FTDI FTD2XX drivers, it is possible for you to remove the drivers from your system. To remove said drivers from your system, the end user need only press windows key + R, type Appwiz.cpl and click on OK.

When the Add or Remove Programs applet appears, simple locate the FTD2XX drivers, click on them, then click on Uninstall.

Is Ftd2xx.dll Resource Hungry?

Ftd2xx.dll as a file that forms part of a larger driver set, which is not known to consume a considerable amount of system resources. However, having too many programs and processes running on your system, at the same time, can adversely affect system performance. Microsoft System Configuration Utility exists, solely for this purpose, to enable and/or disable processes that are applicable to you.

Windows Resource Monitor on the other hand, is a built-in Windows tool, which you can use to identify which programs and/or processes are writing/reading to your hard disc drive the most. It also identifies how much memory these processes are using, along with internet bandwidth. Windows Resource Monitor is a tool that you can access by pressing windows key + R, typing resmon and clicking on OK.

What Causes Ftd2xx.dll Errors?

Ftd2xx.dll issues may occur in many different instances. But when it does occur, it’s typically accompanied by an error message. These error messages vary, but are identifiable in that they all reference the same file. The most common of these messages are the following:

Cannot find ftd2xx.dll. Please re-install this application
Failed to load ftd2xx.dll

There are a number of potential causes for these errors. However, in most cases, errors relating to the ftd2xx.dll file are typically the result of damage/corruption to the file itself. Typically, the end user will attempt to carry out a function or task, which requires the file. However, when the operating system attempts to access the file, the file may be inaccessible, corrupted or missing.

As is typically the case when attempting to rectify an error. Having understanding of its context, when it occurs, why it’s occurring, goes a long way in solving the problem.

Ftd2xx.dll errors are known to occur on virtually every version of Windows (XP, 2000, Vista, 7, 8, & 10).

How to Fix It

If the error occurs while attempting to run a particular program, then the first thing you should do is attempt a reinstall. It’s possible that the program installation is corrupt. Thus, a reinstallation should restore the integrity of the program, rectifying the conflict between it and the ftd2xx.dll file. So I’d recommend you went ahead and did that. If the problem persists, even after a reinstall, only then do I suggest you attempt the many solutions below, in the order that they appear.

Run a Registry Scan

To fix your ftd2xx.dll error, it’s recommended that you clean out your systems registry. The Windows registry, if you don’t know what it is, is a large database that is used to store configuration data for both the hardware and software that makes up your systems construction.

When the operating system attempts to perform a particular function, it will access the registry. From which it will acquire configuration data (such as file references, software settings data), which it will use to perform its task. If this information is corrupted for any reason, the system will halt, and return an error.

Update Drivers

It’s possible that you have one or more components on your system that use drivers that access the ftd2xx.dll file. Thus, you may want to consider updating all of these drivers. The issue lies in identifying these specific components.

Fortunately, there is a workaround, and that’s to use a driver automation tool. The solution(s) below are for ADVANCED level computer users. If you are a beginner to intermediate computer user, I highly recommend you use the automated tool(s) above!

Replace the Ftd2xx.dll File

Another viable method you can use to repair the ftd2xx.dll error on your system, is to replace the file altogether. However, in order to do this, you will need a new, working copy of the file, and the necessary level of computer expertise.

That said, to replace the ftd2xx.dll file on your computer, follow the instructions below:

1. First, ensure you’ve booted into your computer as a full administrator.

2. Then download the ftd2xx.dll file to your system, using the following link: http://www.mediafire.com/file/so7kqbbbbuq7w62/ftd2xx.zip/file

3. Next, press windows key + R, type C:\Windows\System32 and click on OK.

4. When the System32 folder loads up, locate and rename the ftd2xx.dll file to ftd2xxBACKUP.dll.

5. Now, open the ftd2xx.zip file and click on Extract to.

Note: The following step will vary depending on the program you use to open .zip files.

6. This will bring up the Extraction path and options applet, simply type C:\Windows\System32 into the Destination path and click on OK.

7. Once that’s done, press windows key + R, type cmd and click on OK.

8. When Command Prompt loads up, type the following command and press Enter.

regsvr32 ftd2xx.dll

Update Windows

If you’re running one of the later versions of Windows, such as Windows 10, then you’ll be privy to the many updates that are constantly being pushed out. These updates contain security patches and fixes, which in this particular instance, may be beneficial to you. Thus, you may want to consider a Windows Update.
