Support

End users can access the support centre for SOS Online Backup through its browser interfaces. There are a number of articles that you can read through, which of course, are searchable, they cover topics for both business and home users. Support for SOS Online Backup is further divided up based on the device you’re using the tool own, whether it be Mobile, Mac or Windows.

There are over 200 separate articles, for both home and business users. You can find guides on restoration, troubleshooting, getting started, and more. The articles are very concise, straight to the point, and may, in some cases, contain videos.

If you’re unable to find the necessary help for your query, then you can contact their support team directly. Methods available for you to do this, include your typical email support ticket system and live chat.

The live chat option is the best, in my opinion, as it allows you to get in touch with someone, in only a matter of seconds.

Support hours runs every day, at every hour of the day.

Security

By default, files that you transfer to the cloud are not encrypted. However, there is the option to encrypt this data, using its 256-bit AES encryption.

You can choose whether to use your own encryption key or to allow SOS to generate and keep one on your behalf. SOS offers personal encryption, which is also known as zero-knowledge or end-to-end encryption.

If you choose to control your own encryption key, then you will need to make that decision prior to backing any of your files up, because there’s no option for you to change it, later on, which is typically the case with such online backup services.

While, encryption makes things more secure, if you go down the private encryption route, SOS Online Backup will not be able to reset your password, in the event that you lose it.

Files that you transfer to the backup services are also encrypted during transit using SSL/TLS, which prevents hackers from intercepting and deciphering your data.

Once your data is on their data centres, the information is placed on different servers. Copies of your files are stored on multiple services, for redundancy purposes, and the centre itself is secured from any potential disasters, whether natural or cyber related. However, SOS doesn’t provide the end user with any security whitepaper, so you can’t get the specifics on the measures actually taken.

My Experience

All cloud backup services keep backups of your files, because that’s what they’re designed to do, but when you delete those files, where do they go? Most file storage services come with limited file versioning, which means they keep a copy of those files that you have deleted, but that’s usually for no more than a month, then they permanently delete the file.

However, with SOS Online Backup, you have, as I’ve previously described, unlimited file versioning, meaning these files remain for as longs you’re with SOS, and so you can always restore files that you’ve removed.

This means, you can do something drastic like, backup your entire hard drive, or multiple hard drives, and have unlimited access to all of these files, for as long as you’re an account holder. This is one of those features that sets SOS Online Backup apart from the vast majority of its competition.

Setting up SOS Online Backup is very simple, just create an account, then download and install its software. Once completed, run the tool, then you can start backing things up.

The first backup I carried out, went along without any hiccups. I have a relatively fast internet connection, so backing up my files, didn’t take too long. However, the amount of time you will have to wait, will differ, depending on the size of the file(s) you are trying to copy to the cloud and the speed of your internet connection, so that’s something to keep in mind.

You can restore files or whole folders, through the SOS desktop applet, or you can log into the website and do same. This means you can restore files to the original computer you backed everything up from, or you can restore the files to a totally different computer, all you need to do is download the software, log in and restore. This level of flexibility makes it ideal for business and personal use alike.

There’s also a preview option, which you can use before restoring a specific image, video or audio; just so you can be sure you’re restoring the right file. It’s also possible for you to stream certain files, through its mobile app, providing you with on-demand access to your media, no matter where you are.

File sharing is another excellent feature which is available on SOS Online Backup. All you need to do is enter the email address of the individual that you would like to share the file(s) with, and they will receive a download link, which they can use to download the file(s), without having to log into the SOS service.

Managing these shared files can be done quite easily, also. Just access the View Shares section, where you can grant or revoke access at any time that best suits you.

Things I Like

As I previously stated, all tools and services are not without their pros and cons. When it comes to SOS Online Backup, the things I like most about it are:

Its clean and user-friendly interface.
Its fast backup capabilities.
The file versioning feature.
Its support for mobile devices.
Its file sharing feature.

Things I Didn’t Like

When it comes to things that I didn’t like about this tool, or at the very least, could have done with some improvement, I think of the following:

No Windows integration.

Conclusion

SOS Online Backup is the ideal choice for the vast majority of computer user’s backup needs. If you’re someone who would like to back up some files that you intend to delete in the near future, then this is the tool for you, thanks to its file versioning feature.

Backing things up, is relatively simple, through its user interface, you can set it to backup all audio files, images files or document files on your computer, basically, it’s whatever you prefer. So the entire process is very simple and in no way should deter you from using this service. For novices to experts alike, this service is definitely one of the better options out there today.
